How to Eat On-The-Go, Without Compromising Your Health

Right now, many of us are working from our homes, isolating from others, and waiting for Covid-19 to finally let us resume our normal lives. No one is saying this is easy, but there are some hidden benefits to this: we have some unique control over our own schedules and work environments and eating healthier may be just a little bit easier, as we have access to our kitchen while we work. 

You may be wondering how these tectonic shifts in lifestyles will shape into your life once the world opens up again. Post-Covid, when the world returns to at least partial normalcy, a lot of us will be back to our hectic lives and struggling to find a quick bite that satisfies our busy schedule. When you’re busy at work, and don’t have access to a fully stocked kitchen, making good choices for your food can be tough. 

Did you know that 52% of Americans believe that doing their taxes is easier than eating healthy? If you’re one of that 52%, then perhaps eating healthy seems like too much work. Or you are just really good at doing taxes. 

But don’t worry. There are ways that you can improve your on-the-go eating habits. For one, having all the locally-sourced fresh meals that a Mama Gaia fridge has to offer will make your life much easier to quickly grab a healthy lunch. However, if you can’t or don’t have that option yet, here are some other tips for eating on-the-go, without compromising your health.

Fast food, or good food fast?

In America, a huge amount of people (at least 25%) eat some sort of fast food every day. It’s quick and convenient, but often very damaging to your health. However, there is a unique subset of the industry called fast casual, and the difference between fast food and fast casual is massive.

Some of my personal favorites are Vital Root and Biju’s Little Curry Shop, which offer fresh, healthy food conveniently. These are Denver-based restaurants, and that’s often where you will find the best healthy food; local places rather than chains. So keep an eye out in your area for delicious and nutritious places like these. 

However, even if your choice of restaurant isn’t always top-knotch, you can still find healthy food alternatives (and it doesn’t always have to be a salad). Keep these things in mind when looking over every menu: 

  • Fresh is best! Always. Check the ingredient list, find out exactly where this food is coming from.
  • Always go for grilled over fried. Grilled food is much less greasy and far better for you.
  • Give veggie-based meat alternatives a try. This is a great way to sneak more veggies into your diet, and sometimes the difference in taste isn’t even noticeable.
  • Fill up on protein. Protein is amazing for your body, and can boost your energy levels for the rest of your workday. Fresh deli meat, nuts, oats, and cottage cheese are delicious and packed with protein.


Keep healthy snacks in arm's reach

You've been there: in the middle of finishing a major project, and you've filled up on loads of caffeine and no substance. You need a little boost to keep you going. You could reach for whatever junk is in the vending machine, but you know that kind of food will leave you feeling lethargic and bloated. This is why many people say you should always keep healthy snacks within your arm's reach while you're working.

As with meals, protein is a great choice here. Oatmeal, granola bars, trail mix (without the candy), and other such foods are a great on the go snack for the middle of your workday. It's crucial to set aside time to eat or snack - even if it’s just a five-minute break. This five-minute break does wonders for your stomach, your head, and your schedule. Allow yourself to enjoy these five minutes breaks, and come back refreshed and better focused. Letting yourself walk away and slow down for small intervals throughout your day will help to keep you grounded and focused on your goals - and it'll push you to keep your food choices fresh and healthy. This, combined with better snack choices, will help you eat healthier without giving up your busy schedule. 

We all know that eating well when you’re busy is hard. Grabbing easy, on-the-go, unhealthy food can be so alluring, but in the long run, it’s worse for both your physical and mental health. 

That’s why making healthy food choices can be a much better option. Set aside some time, make eating a deliberate act, and choose healthier on-the-go food alternatives and snacks. This will not only help you feel better about yourself, but it can give you energy and boost your productivity.
